There are two types of diabetes mellitus:

(i) insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM): This is caused by a failure of the beta-cells to produce adequate amounts of insulin;

(ii) non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM): It appears to involve failure of insulin to facilitate the movement of glucose into cells. In both disorders the blood glucose concentrations is elevated above the normal range.
